仕組みはこうだ。２００７年のトヨタの総売り上げは１２兆７９３億円、うち輸出が８兆５２７９億円、国内売り上げが３兆５５１３億円だそうだ。他方で、課税仕入れ（消費税がかかっている仕入）は９兆９９９０億円だという。

　この数字をもとに消費税を計算すると、輸出には消費税がかからないから、トヨタが支払う消費税は、３兆５５１３億円×５％で１７７６億円にとどまる。

　他方、課税仕入れに対しては消費税分５％が還付されるため、９兆９９９０億円×５％＝４９９５億円が還付される（９兆９９９０億円は税別ということなのだろう）。

　つまり、トヨタは差し引き３２１９億円が還付されることになる。１０％になれば、６０００億円、１５％になれば１兆円が還付されることになる。
